Horticulture Corner

March 2022 update.
It’s that time of year again, when those of us with any kind of green fingers finally wake from our winter slumber to start sowing seeds and planning our horticultural journey for Togher Tidy Towns in 2022.

In 2021 we achieved some excellent results, completely redesigning a flower bed that had overgrown by Togher Garda station, installing new planters by Applegreen on Togher Road, working with Cork City Council on a raised bed at the bottom of forge hill and maintaining our beds, borders and boxes all over Togher. This hard work contributed to our continued improvement on the Tidy Towns league table. And we are very grateful to our volunteers, sponsors and Cork City Council for all their help.

For 2022 I am delighted to announce that we are partnering with Colaiste Stiofan Naofa’s horticultural course to produce a crop of bedding plants. These will be grown from seed and raised under glass until ready to plant outside in May. By growing from seed we reduce our carbon footprint and will learn all sorts of important lessons about what is and is not suitable. Its sure to be a fascinating journey, so watch this space for my next update.
Finally, the fruits of our final planting effort in 20221 are now blooming. Although Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin damaged some of our work, its fantastic to see Daffodils, Crocus, Polyanthus and Bellis all performing to their best in shades of yellows, purples, whites, and reds.
